I painted this portrait of my nephew Orihah. I had the privilege last year visiting him in Perth a month before he died. In that time he allowed me to sing over him while he was in chronic pain. He told me that my singing soothed his pain. The song I sang was, This is amazing grace.
This painting is my response to his final hours. It was reported that Andrew lead the others that were with him into worshiping Jesus and that he yelled out "bless you Indonesia". He forgave those who were about to execute him and looked them in the eye. The song that he was singing at his time to meet Jesus was 10,000 reasons. Andrew Chan has left an impact on my heart and I think of his conversion to Christ as amazing and inspiring.
This is an important painting due to it’s symbolic nature. It expresses my reaction to my son’s diagnoses of VCFS (velo, cardio, facial, syndrome) aka. q22.dil.11.2 This image of the child holding the balloon is very significant. Zach is surrounded by bigger things than himself but his focus is up. He is smiling up at the balloon and the balloon is orange like the sun, symbolizing hope and a sunny outlook.
